Kicking Horse Residence Embraces the Natural World in British Columbia

In British Columbia there's a lot to take in with all the trees, mountains and vistas - which is why the <a href="http://www.bcj.com/public/projects/project/143.html" target="_blank">Kicking Horse Residence</a> was designed to embrace the outdoors from within. The mountain retreat enjoys slope-side access to the <a href="http://kickinghorseresort.com/" target="_blank">Kicking Horse Mountain Resort</a> in Golden, BC, and it's large enough to accommodate a whole family for a ski weekend or summer retreat. Designed by <a href="http://www.bcj.com/" target="_blank">Bohlin Cywinski Jackson</a>, the light-filled home features natural ventilation and materials that give it even stronger ties to its surrounding environment.

The <a href="http://www.bcj.com/public/projects/project/143.html" target="_blank">Kicking Horse Residence</a> is a mountain retreat designed for an active family of five at the base of a ski resort in Golden, BC.

The home consists of two main volumes - a long, linear area on the north side that contains the utilities, garage, play room, mudroom, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms, and a shell volume that contains the open living room and dining room (with great views of the mountains).

The 3,500 sq ft home features five bedrooms, three of which are in the loft. A flexible layout allows the home to easily accommodate larger groups of people.

The living area is connected to the rest of the home by a stairwell and bridge.

The linear volume cantilevers out over the space, creating a dramatic impression while allowing snow, water and plant life to continue undisturbed below.

Most of the rooms enjoy <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/daylighting" target="_blank">natural lighting</a>, and operable vents allow for fresh air as needed.

The project's materials include standing seam metal roofs, engineered lumber, plywood ceilings and walls, concrete and glass.

Low-maintenance by design, the home is durable and requires little work by the family to maintain.

Bunk beds in the loft provide ample sleeping space for extra guests.
