Daniel Libeskind’s dynamic new convention centre in Mons, Belgium, is now open to the public. Known as “MICX”, the Mons International Congress Xperience is a geometric, ship-like structure that’s ideal for hosting all manner of events. The building’s three auditoriums feature sleek, luxurious “Tangram” chairs designed by Libeskind for Poltrona Frau Contract.

MICX’s auditoriums can seat 500, 200, and 100 people respectively, and the seats that Libeskind designed are certain to keep folks comfortable while they’re engaged in lectures and presentations. The vibrant orange Tangram seats combine luxurious lounge chair comfort with the functionality required of auditorium seating. Each chair is formed from fireproof polyurethane wrapped around a wooden structure, and the noise-dampening nylon joints allow the springless folding mechanism to open and close almost silently.
Designed to be a new architectural landmark for the city, the 41,010-square-foot Congress Center bridges a gap between Mons’ classical architecture, and new, modern offerings. It opened just in time to host the 2015 European Capital of Culture activities, which will transform this tiny medieval town into a hub of cultural and diplomatic events. Mons is one of two cities being celebrated in 2015; the other is Plzeň in the Czech republic.
