This balloontasic mobile art pavilion will make its debut next summer in Brazil where it will travel to ten different cities in honor of the 2014 World Cup and then the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Designed by Grimshaw, Mobilizarte is a cultural pavilion that aims to make international exhibitions, film festivals and arts education accessible to all. The open air pavilion will be built from prefabricated parts and covered in floating foil and plastic balloons facilitating natural ventilation and unique lighting schemes.
Grimshaw is working in collaboration with Arup Rio de Janeiro to design the environmentally-minded mobile pavilion. Lightweight materials and prefab design will be used to the necessary elements of the pavilion, which also allow for multiple configurations and easy installation and dismantling. The dramatic roof is composed of a system of floating foil and floating balloons with large vents, which will allow not only for natural ventilation, but more importantly, a fantastic lighting scheme.
Inspired by Brazilian art and culture and the optimistic spirit of the Brazilian Modern Movement, the design is driven by the logistics of mobility and adapts to each location environmentally, economically and socially. The exhibition will be closely connected to both the World Cup as well as the Olympics, and will feature educational workshops, outdoor films, and exhibits. The pavilion will begin its travels in the summer of 2012 and continue touring through ten select cities in Brazil.
