When it comes to your health, your mattress might be the last thing you think about. You may nourish yourself with organic food and bathe yourself in natural body products, but we often forget that we spend one third of our lives sleeping: in our beds. Inhabitat has done extensive research on how mattresses can be dangerous to your health — conventional mattresses are laced with flame retardants containing high levels of VOCs known to cause chronic asthma, hormone disruption, and even cancer. My Green Mattress is one of very few American and family-owned businesses offering natural, chemical-free and hypoallergenic mattresses. Read on to learn their story, and how they were inspired to bring toxin-free sleep to people everywhere.
The founder of My Green Mattress, Tim Masters, started making toxin-free mattresses as a worried parent. His daughter Emily was born suffering from severe eczema and allergies. Tim and his wife Cindy consulted the best pediatric dermatologists, but it was only when they switched their infant daughter to an organic mattress that her symptoms finally dissipated.
Tim was soon after inspired to bring organic bedding to others struggling with the same problems. His handcrafted line of 100% all-natural mattresses are made with natural latex and certified USA-sourced organic cotton ticking, thread, foundations, and innersprings. He also uses a natural Joma wool to meet federal flame retardant requirements.
Designed to be pressure, stiffness, and pain-relieving, My Green Mattress’ Simple Sleep mattress is made with 100% Oeko-Tex Certified natural dunlop latex and a soft, GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton fabric cover. Derived from renewable rubber trees, latex has natural anti-microbial properties resistant to dust mites, mold and mildew. It also reduces motion (when you turn in your sleep) and is naturally breathable, keeping you warmer in winter and cooler in summer. And unlike conventional mattresses made with foam, latex does not off gas any chemicals, yet offers a safe, comfortable and restorative sleep. That sounds pretty dreamy to me.
