Between portable batteries and cases with built-in power, there are a multitude of ways to recharge your device on the go. Unfortunately, all of them require that you pre-charge the backup itself. However, a team of researchers from Northwestern University has a solution in the works that could let you charge your mobile device as you take your morning run. Called myPower, the device captures a runner’s kinetic energy and can turn a 45-minute run into enough electricity to keep a smartphone running for eight hours.

NUvention Energy class students Tajas Shastry, Michael Geier, and Alexander Smith developed the myPower running companion device so that hugs to your hip and captures free energy as you do laps around the track. The device itself is about the size and shape of a dry erase board with a fixed belt clip. According to the students, the myPower device would help offset the carbon footprint of a phone, which is nearly five million metric tons of carbon dioxide yearly.

The NUvention Energy team also recently entered its myPower pack into the 1776 Challenge Cup energy division competition where it won top marks. The device could be a huge win for clean energy—in addition to helping people stay fit, charged, and green. The three students, meanwhile, are working on developing their prototype into a finished product that will have an additional USB port for regular plug-in charging. The device is expected to have a final price point of $60.
