Evan Z. Crane believes that longevity is a crucial element in sustainable design, which is why his heirloom furniture is built to be so robust. Born and based in Brooklyn, Crane is an exceptionally talented craftsman who represents the borough with pride. Combining the latest computer numerically controlled (CNC) technology with traditional furniture-making techniques and more than a sprinkle of sass, he creates modern heirloom furniture that would make your grandmother proud! Check him out at the upcoming BKLYN Designs exhibition in DUMBO.
When ordering pieces from Crane, customers can choose from a variety of reclaimed woods, lacquer colors and upholstery options, but the studio’s showcase pieces are awesome as is. Take the unusual Six Legs Bench, for example, a low-slung sapele bench with lacquered steel and a seat covered in monster print. The pattern, albeit a bit shocking at first, actually complements the clean design really well and is featured in several of the studio’s other pieces.
The Splayed Star Table is a bit more of a traditional piece also crafted from sapele hardwood. Up to 50 inches in diameter, this expertly crafted piece also comprises lacquered steel and brass hardware. While Crane uses a somewhat minimalist material palette in this fun line, the designs and detail work are incredibly sophisticated. If you need to see it to believe it, or just love checking out a whole host of awesome designers in one inspiring space, please stop by BKLYN Designs from May 9-11, 2014 and say hello!
