If you’ve ever wanted to try glamping (glamorous camping), here’s your chance! Inspired by the tent communities that popped up at Rockaway Beach in the early 1900s, Camp Rockaway is an initiative to bring beach camping back to Queens. The team behind this ambitious goal recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to start their safari-style tent campground, but they need your help to make it a reality.

Summertime is a wonderful chance to escape the city – even if it’s just hopping on the A train for the trek out to Rockaway Beach. After being ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, the community has been working together to help rebuild the area and bring business back to the beach. This is where Camp Rockaway comes in. The proposed “glamping” community is all about celebrating the wonders of Rockaway Beach by inviting visitors to stay and experience it at night.

Camp Rockaway offers the tranquility of waking up on the beach without leaving New York City proper, but features a more comfortable experience than just sleeping on the ground. Each tent features real beds, fresh sheets and light blankets. The grounds themselves will offer private fire pits, outdoor showers and even hot tubs with views of Jamaica Bay! If the project is realized, there will also be local tours, relaxing hammocks, and a program for kids.

Camp Rockaway hopes to pop up in 2015, letting New Yorkers extend their beach day into the night, and more importantly, experience the beauty of the Rockaways in the morning before other beachgoers arrive.
