In a recent interview with Hyper Allergic, Novacek explained that her vision for building the “Citizen Bridge” began over four years ago when she realized she was able to see Governor’s Island from her apartment in Red Hook. Unsettled by the idea that there was no way for people to simply walk to the island even though it was so close, Novacek was inspired to build a floating pedestrian bridge that could connect Brooklyn to the popular summer destination. Over the years, she has made a lot of progress with a little help from some friends such as architect Jonathan Marvel and representatives from the civil engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti and marine engineering firm Glosten.

Developing a decent prototype is no easy feat. In fact, Novacek has built seven prototypes, including the most recent 32-by-16-foot floating superblock. Made from modular styrofoam blocks interconnected with decking, it was tested in Gowanus Bay last September with great results. During the test run, the structure held two simultaneous, asymmetrical loads of 3,000 pounds of sand.

After a few revisions, the project’s final design is now prepped for testing at a projected proof-of-concept installation along the Brooklyn Waterfront this summer. However, at this stage, the bridge will need some financial backing to build the final version and convert the Citizen Bridge dream into reality. If you’d like to be able to walk to Governors Island from Brooklyn, show your support by funding the Citizen Bridge Kickstarter campaign here.
