Bloomberg L.P.’s midtown Manhattan global headquarters and downtown data center will soon be a lot greener thanks to the new Bloomberg-JFK Airport Park Solar Project. The state-of-the-art large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plan will enable the Manhattan sites to get a portion of their needed electricity from the sun by maximizing the solar power generated at three facilities in Queens. According to EnterSolar, the commercial provider of solar power chosen to head up the plan, the project will generate enough clean energy to save over a million lbs. of carbon emissions per year.
The Bloomberg solar power project marks a few important firsts in New York clean energy history. It will be the largest remote net metered project in the city to date, as well as the first project of its kind to use remote net metering (RNM) to power a midtown Manhattan skyscraper. RNM allows sites that aren’t well-suited for solar power installations to benefit from the solar systems located at other sites.
The project includes 1,500 kW of solar capacity across three adjacent facilities at the JFK Airport Park in Springfield Gardens, Queens. That is the largest rooftop solar array in Queens and is among the largest rooftop solar projects in New York State, with over 5,500 solar panels. The power generated by those solar panels will be converted to energy credits and applied to Bloomberg’s offices in New York City.
The project is estimated to generate 1.8 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy each year, which is equivalent to the amount of electricity used by more than 244 typical homes in the same amount of time. Because solar power is also much cleaner than traditional forms of energy, this project will also eliminate almost 1.1 million pounds of CO2 per year.
