Luxury car manufacturer Lexus was recently awarded LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its Eastern Area Office training facility in Parsippany, New Jersey. Under the design leadership of international architecture and interior design firm Ware Malcomb, 38,000 square feet of warehouse space was converted to accommodate a café, elegant meeting spaces, interior glass garage doors and 16 service training bays. “The new Lexus Eastern Area Office is not only a vibrant and creative space, it also provides a sustainable and collaborative work environment for current and future Lexus employees,” said Michael Bennett, Regional Director of Ware Malcomb’s New Jersey office.
The newly renovated facility includes 18,000 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet for classrooms and high bay training areas to teach technicians across the eastern region how to service the next generation of hybrid, plug-in and other environmentally and technologically significant vehicles.
With help from construction management company JLL, Walcomb incorporated the following sustainable attributes into the converted warehouse:
• Daylight sensors in office and warehouse space
• Zoning controls for more than 75 percent of the space
• 40 percent reduction in water usage
• 20 percent reduction in energy usage
• Efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning units meet the high-performance efficiency requirements
• Construction materials were salvaged and repurposed by Habitat for Humanity for future local area projects
“Lexus, with its design team of Ware Malcomb, had the vision to transform this aging warehouse site into a highly functional and technologically advanced sales office and training facility,” said JLL managing director Jerry Sullivan in a statement released in April of this year. “Working with such support vendors as Snap-On, KEA, Langan and Hollister Construction, along with the push for excellence and performance by the client, the building was converted into a highly efficient and multi-functional facility for the firm’s area managers and trainers.”
