We wrote about the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s “New York’s Next Top Makers” competition back in October, and we’re excited to say that the contest is now open to submissions. The call challenges NYC designers and inventors to enter their product designs for a chance to win cash prizes and an opportunity to prototype their products. If you have a great idea but aren’t sure where to begin or how to raise money to produce it, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Mayor Bloomberg and the city are hoping that the new contest will spur NYC entrepreneurs and makers and boost creativity and small business in the city. The grand prize winner will take home an $11,000 cash prize and the top six makers will receive assistance towards commercializing their ideas during a five-month studio phase with mentorships from Shapeways, Adafruit Industries, and Honeybee Robotics. In order to qualify, new product ideas can be in any of the following categories: consumer products, equipment, furniture and lighting, soft goods, packaging, interaction, transportation and DIY items.

So how can you enter?

1. Go to the contest website and click the “Accept this Challenge” button.
2. Complete the submission form.
3. Don’t forget to tell your friends and family to vote for you during the voting period!

“This contest will make sure New York City stays on the cutting edge of 3-D printing, an exciting new industry with virtually unlimited potential, and which could completely revolutionize manufacturing,” said Mayor Bloomberg about the new competition. “New York City – the center of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship – is a natural home for Shapeways, and we look forward to seeing what kinds of exciting products – and quality jobs – they can create.”

Good luck everyone!
