A gingerbread subway station complete with gingerbread rats! We really have to hand it to the chefs who took part in this year's City Harvest Gingerbread Extravaganza for taking their cookie creations to a whole new level of verisimilitude - right down to the gingerbread subway rats! This year's "Quintessential New York"-themed scenes are now on display in the atrium of Le Parker Meridien Hotel, and range from a gingerbread Chrysler building to a gingerbread subway station to a gingerbread Coney Island complete with a licorice-tracked roller coaster. Flip through our gallery to see photos of these amazing works of edible art and read on to see how you can vote and help raise money to feed the city's hungry.
The 2013 Gingerbread Extravaganza will be on display at Le Parker Meridien’s 56th Street atrium until January 6th, 2014. All of the scenes were made by local bakeries and restaurants including Baked Ideas, Butterfly Bakeshop, Citarella, Cupcake Cafe, David Burke Kitchen, Hecho en Dumbo, Il Ristorante Rosi, Le Monde, Liddabit Sweets, Norma’s, Rolling Pin Productions, Aperitivo Restaurant, Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto and Sirio Ristorante. Visitors are encouraged to purchase $1 tickets at the hotel’s concierge desk to vote for their favorite creations. Each vote also acts as a raffle ticket to win a 5-night stay at the Parker Palm Springs. All of the proceeds from voting will benefit City Harvest, which will use the funds to continue its efforts to end hunger in the world’s cities. You can also cast your vote online here.
Some standouts that caught our eye this year were an extremely detailed gingerbread version of Coney Island by Rolling Pin Productions and Aperitivo Restaurant and Norma’s hilarious gingerbread subway scene featuring tiny rats rocking “I ❤ NY” t-shirts.
