Fall may be the air, but New Yorkers who want to grasp onto the remaining days of summer can get their final fix at this weekend's Summer Streets festival! The nearly 7-mile-long, carless celebration has turned Park Avenue into a pedestrian paradise akin to the High Line for the past two weekends, but this Saturday, the 17th, will be your last chance to check it out until next year. Flip through our photo gallery to see some of the fun activities you'll be able to find at Summer Streets, including Voice Tunnel, an interactive sound and light show inside the Park Avenue Tunnel.
Summer Streets is an annual festival that shuts down 7 miles of Manhattan to cars, letting pedestrians, bicyclists and skaters roam free along Park Avenue. The free, outdoor event will offer performances, art installations, educational areas and activities like rock wall climbing, zip-lining, mini golf and more.
The major draw of this year’s festival has been the Voice Tunnel, an installation by Rafael Lozano-Hammer that turns the Park Avenue Tunnel (which is usually not accessible by pedestrians) into an interactive display of lights and sounds. As you might imagine, the Voice Tunnel has been very popular and lines are long, so if you want to see it, be sure to follow our tips at the bottom of this article.
Don’t forget – Saturday, August 17th will be the final day of the fest this year, and the party will end at 1:00PM, so don’t oversleep if you want to join in on this last hurrah before fall!
