This weekend, Queens residents can help make their borough a little more green. On October 14, Build it Green!NYC and the Western Queens Compost Initiative will give away 100 trees, thanks to NYRP’s MillionTreesNYC! Community members can sign up and snag a free tree to plant in their yard or neighborhood.
On their quest to plant one million trees in New York City, MillionTreesNYC is giving Queens some tree love – the fall tree giveaway will bring even more greenery to the borough. One tree will be allotted to each registered household, so make sure to sign up online prior to the event. From 11 am to 1 pm, trees can be picked up on a first come first serve basis- so make sure to get there early so you can claim your sapling!
Although the trees will be given away in Queens, NYRP only requires that they are planted somewhere in the five boroughs, so Brooklynites can make the trek and claim one for their borough too. The free trees also can’t be planted along streets, in city parks, in containers or on roofs- so think backyards, community gardens, schools, church yards and other private property.
Like any loving adoption agency, the NYRP also requires that the trees be properly cared for, watered and maintained to ensure a thriving life of greenery in Queens.
Participants can choose between American Persimmon, Servicebetter, Common Witchhazel and Blackgum trees. Make sure to sign up and get their early to bring a tree to your community!
