New York’s Financial District is changing its buttoned-up image this summer with a pop-up urban beach and other fun activities to enjoy. The Downtown Alliance recently opened their newly transformed strip of Water Street between Whitehall and Wall as part of its Game On! Summer series. In addition to the seasonal festivities, visitors will be able to sip some brews at an outdoor beer garden and play a round of mini-golf.
The Downtown Alliance hopes that the new urban beach and summer program will help reactivate the area and its public spaces, which are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. To help liven up the neighborhood, local deli and restaurant, Zigolinis, has setup a beer garden along Coenties Slip Park.
Whitehall Plaza, meanwhile, has been converted into an urban beach with lounge chairs for visitors to soak up the sun. There are also games of shuffleboard set up for the people to play. Additionally, the Downtown Alliance has erected a three-hole mini-golf course at the Elevated Acre at 55 Water Street. Elsewhere, soccer fans can watch the World Cup games on giant outdoor screens set up at the Andaz Wall Street hotel’s beer garden.
Another big attractions coming to the Financial District will be a set of two giant Connect Four games along Gouverneur Lane. Visitors will also be able to play Nok Hockey and Battleship along the Old Slip Park. Across the way, food trucks including Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, Korilla BBQ, and Del’s Frozen Lemonade will be selling their tasty treats as well.
The trucks will be at the park every weekday from noon to 4PM. The whole Game On! festival itself will run from now through Labor Day (September 1st). The festival starts every weekday at 12PM and ends at 7PM.
