The OEM erected three apartments near its Brooklyn offices at Cadman Plaza. The units range in size from 480 square feet to 813 square feet and contain one to three bedrooms. Despite their different sizes, each one includes a small balcony, storage space, a kitchen, a living area, a bathroom and a bedroom(s).

In the case of another emergency like Superstorm Sandy, these structures can be assembled on-site to provide flood and other disaster victims a place to stay, ideally in their own neighborhoods. The OEM and other city employees will test the sample units in the coming months. Meanwhile, the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering and Pratt University will conduct a study to predict how well the units will perform as living spaces as well as whether they can restore a neighborhood following a disaster when used in mass.
