Porsche recently unveiled the updated 2015 Cayenne SUV, which will be the first plug-in hybrid SUV on the market when it arrives this fall. Tesla and BMW are also working on electrified SUVs, but Porsche looks set to beat them to the market with the arrival of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid. A powerful lithium-ion traction battery with an energy capacity of 10.8 kWh allows the vehicle to drive in fully electric mode at speeds up to 78 mph.
The Cayenne S E-Hybrid looks almost identical to the standard Cayenne, but under the hood it is powered by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 and an electric motor that generate a total 416 horsepower and 435 lb-ft of torque. It can reach reach zero to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds and it has a top speed of 151 mph.
Porsche does say that the Cayenne S E-Hybrid can travel in full electric mode, but the automaker has not announced how far it can travel. The hybrid system is the same system used by the Panamera S E-Hybrid, which can travel up to 15 miles in EV mode, so it’s expected that the Cayenne will have a similar range.
The 2015 Cayenne S E-Hybrid is scheduled to arrive in showrooms this November with a starting price set at $76,400.
