Teachers Village, Richard Meier and Partners, newark, 230 halsey street, mixed-use development, leed neighborhood

230 Halsey Street is just one of eight buildings that make up the mixed-use Teachers Village in Newark. Located in Newark’s downtown district south of Market Street, the project will create a new urban core with walkable streets, retail, residences and schools. There will be approximately 200 residential units available for teachers, along with three charter schools, and a daycare center. The project was master planned by Richard Meier, who was actually born in Newark.

On September 25th, Richard Meier and Partners celebrated the opening of 230 Halsey Street and were accompanied at the ribbon cutting ceremony by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker. The bottom level of the structure provides retail space, while the top three will be used for 2 different charter schools. The entire project is pursuing LEED for Neighborhood Development designation with the US Green Building Council. This means the project has been designed to meet high levels of sustainable design and incorporated the principles of smart growth, urbanism and green building strategies. The project also helps to revitalize the downtown core and replaces parking lots with a new high quality neighborhood.
