The auto industry continues to strengthen its ties with Silicon Valley: Toyota and cloud computing company Salesforce have just teamed up to develop Toyota Friend, a private social network to connect Toyota customers and their cars. Toyota Friend will be powered by Salesforce’s network Salesforce Chatter, and will be rolled out first in Japan with electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in 2012.

Toyota Friend will connect Toyota owners with their cars and dealerships, sending them friendly maintenance reminders as well as product tips and info. The service will be available through smart phones and tablet PCs as well as the cars themselves, and owners will have the option to extend their communication beyond the private network to public networks like Twitter and Facebook.
