Remember back in the early 2000’s when cell phone companies were racing to see who could create the smallest phone, even though we weren’t really sure why? The electronics industry’s sudden obsession with smartwatches feels strangely reminiscent of that time. Samsung recently became the latest company to announce its entrance into the smartwatch arena, with the debut of the “Galaxy Gear.” Unlike other smartwatch concepts, the Galaxy Gear isn’t meant to replace your phone, but to provide a hands-free extension of it. Equipped with S-Voice, Samsung’s version of Siri, the wrist-gadget can be used to make phone calls, dictating email, and checking the weather–all without lifting a finger.
