Simply called the Cast Iron House, the historic gem is currently undergoing a makeover by Shigeru Ban. The interior of the building will also be designed by Ban, and will include white lacquer cabinetry, white lacquer desks and die-cast aluminum door levers. The building will also have a shared garden courtyard with bamboo trees, a sauna and steam room, a game room and an exercise room.
Ban’s new penthouses will also continue the white metal theme. The new structures will have a Vierendeel truss, which cantilevers and supports the immense glass walls that can open to the elements and create total continuity from inside and out when opened. Both units will have ample private outdoor terrace space, which will give incredible views of the skyline. One penthouse addition will have four bedrooms at a size of 3,800 square feet, while the other will be even bigger with five bedrooms and 4,560 square feet of space.
Two renderings have been revealed by The New York Times thus far. The new penthouses will hit the market next month, with an estimated price of $12 million to $15 million.
