SHoP Architects recently unveiled their skinniest design yet, a 1,350-ft.-tall skyscraper measuring a mere 42 ft. across. The razor-thin high-rise is destined for a plot of land on West 57th Street in midtown Manhattan and features a stepped facade that will make the building look a bit like a “stairway to heaven.”

When built, the new development will be the latest ultra-luxe condo tower near Columbus Circle, just south of Central Park, where it will cast a long, skinny shadow. Although the building will be 100 feet taller than the Empire State Building, many of the floors will span just 4,000 to 5,000 square feet according to city records obtained by The Wall Street Journal. It’s no human kennel, but that’s a lot less square footage per floor than many other NYC buildings.

The property developers, JDS Development and Property Markets Group, say they hope to break ground by early next year. The plans were just submitted to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission last month. However, the developers and SHoP Architects haven’t divulged any funding for the project yet, so it could still be a ways off before we see it added to the city skyline.
