In an effort to create awareness and involve the online community in the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD), the United Nations launched a logo design contest for the 2016 edition. The winning design by DE Inc strives to showcase the relationship between sustainable living and nature, reinforcing this year’s theme: Mainstreaming of Biodiversity – Sustaining People and their Livelihoods. The IBD is an important initiative of the United Nations held every May 22nd to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. There are alarming threats to species and ecosystems with a rate of human-caused species extinction that continues to rapidly increase. A shift to sustainability is needed in order to preserve our natural heritage and valuable ecological assets for present and future generations. DE Inc’s logo is a small, but relevant, example of how creativity and design can move the world.
Mainstreaming is shown with fluid elements that link humanity and nature in a dynamic global context. The Fish is representative both of biological diversity but also of a natural resource that some communities rely on for sustenance and economic activity. The Leaves as well are representative of diversity of vegetation but also as a resource that is fundamental to livelihoods of communities. The Human represents balancing the impact of human economic, social, and cultural needs with the health of the global environment. The threat to biodiversity is immense and a transition to an eco-industrial economy and society is imperative.
