Smart, multifunctional technology is revolutionizing our cities, and it’s going far beyond self-driving cars and home automation. One such example is Totem, a solar-powered street lamp unveiled yesterday that’s integrated with WIFI and 4G communications, electric vehicle charging, and enough onboard energy generation and storage that it can be tapped in emergency situations. Totem could replace our ubiquitous streetlights to make clean, renewable energy available almost anywhere in the city.
Totem Power, Inc. describes their design as the “world’s first energy solution to reimagine and redesign smart utility.” Totem’s potential in steering cities towards cleaner energy lies in its scalable model and its versatile and elegant look designed to complement a variety of settings, from corporate campuses to shopping centers. As a WIFI and 4G hub, Totem also unifies smart energy and connectivity, an important combination that allows the Totem to maintain critical services and communications in the event of grid failure.
“Totem believes design can fundamentally change the world. We’re on a mission to realize the full potential of energy’s transformation by providing communities and corporations with intelligent, experiential and engaging structures – something that delivers powerful functionality and tells an easily understood story about clean energy and the next generation of critical services,” said Brian Lakamp, CEO and founder of Totem Power. “We are building technology for the cities of tomorrow.” The first Totem model is slated for release in summer 2017.
