For a while now, we have been excited by Google’s attempts to create a self-driven car that uses video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to identify traffic and allow the driver to sit back and relax. Well now, it seems like the autonomous car is close to becoming an everyday reality, as the state of Nevada has just granted Google with the world’s first license for a computer-controller, driverless Toyota Prius.

While Google’s driverless car has had its setbacks, the fact that Google now has a license will allow it to test its vehicle on Nevada’s public roads. Previously all tests have been done on tracks or parking lot rooftops with a driver on standby in case the technology fails.

Google’s converted Toyota Prius uses video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to identify and avoid other cars on the road, while using detailed maps (probably Google Maps!) to navigate the roads.

The license is the first of its kind issued in the United States, and the car even has the distinction of having a new type of licence plate created especially for it — it is red in color and features the infinity symbol.

Department director Bruce Breslow said that the use of the infinity symbol shows that driverless cars are the transport of the future. “The unique red plate will be easily recognized by the public and law enforcement and will be used only for licensed autonomous test vehicles,” said Breslow. “When there comes a time that vehicle manufactures market autonomous vehicles to the public, that infinity symbol will appear on a green license plate.”
