Designed by Morgan Ruben Jansen op de Haar, a Dutch designer who aims to bridge the gap between nature and man-made objects, Sanctuaria is an art installation aimed to preserve miniature pieces of nature. This series of work consists of a series of capsules that carry endangered plant species such as orchids, ferns and mosses from tropical rainforests around the globe. Sanctuaria becomes a final refuge, as its name would imply, since the ecosystems that housed these little life forms have already been destroyed. Currently, the project features 2 as-yet unnamed species of orchid obtained from cut trees in Asia, but they can house any number of different endangered plants. With habitat loss and destruction so prevalent all over the world, Sanctuaria capsules may provide homes to species that would otherwise be lost to the world forever.
