Stony Brook’s new hydroponic ‘Freight Farm’ can grow up to 1,200 lettuce heads a week right on campus

New York's Stony Brook University is the first institute of higher education to install a Freight Farm, an innovative fully-operational hydroponic farm.

The farm, known as the "Leafy Green Machine", will be managed by Stony Brook students who will use a myriad of technologies such as cloud-synced growth data, live camera feeds and a smartphone app in order to hydroponically grow fresh greens year round.

The Leafy Green Machine is 320-square-foot shipping container unit that is equipped with a high-density vegetable and herb garden on the interior.
