SXSW Eco recently announced the fifteen finalists that will go on to compete in their annual conference’s Place by Design Competition. Final submissions were hand-selected by a distinguished jury of leading design theorists and architects, and will be exhibited during the conference held in Austin this year. From installing LED light displays to create a vivacious environment below a city underpass to transforming abandoned billboards into suspended bamboo gardens, we promise instant inspiration when you click through our gallery to check out a few of these genius concepts.

“The common thread linking all of the finalists is their potential to change the way we all view and interact with public space,” said Chris Sonnier, Program Manager of SXSW Eco. The visionary finalists for the Place by Design competition range from up-and-coming young designers to experienced architectural firms from all over the world. Taking risks and re-imagining public spaces, the finalists came up with a slew of innovative concepts that are worth their weight in community collaboration, sustainable infrastructure, and smart design.
