Earlier this year Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted about a robotic snake charger for electric vehicles – and the company has unveiled the serpentine charging tendril in all its glory. A new video released by the automaker demonstrates the prototype robo-snake slithering its way to the charging port on a Tesla Model S.
The arm looks like something out of a sci-fi film, and it’s mesmerizing to watch it find a charging port all on its own. This innovation is not only super neat (and slightly unsettling), but will be the epitome of convenience for Model S drivers, saving them the extra steps required to plug in their EVs.
The slithering charger arm was first mentioned in a tweet back in December, when Tesla clarified that the technology will be compatible for both old and new car models. It is still unclear whether Tesla plans to actually roll out the charging snakes, and whether they will be used for supercharger stations or home setups. What we do know for sure is that there are plenty of reasons to get excited about Tesla’s new developments and what they mean for the future of eco-friendly travel.
