The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards Announce Their 2012 Shortlist

The <a href="http://www.arena-international.com/leafawards/categories/">Emirates Glass LEAF Awards</a> were conceived nine years ago to honor architects and their buildings which have set a new benchmark for the international architectural community. A total of 46 entries made the shortlist in each of the 10 categories that include Refurbishment of the Year, Public Building of the Year, Best Sustainable Development, and Best Future Building. This year’s jury consisted of six upstanding individuals within the architectural community: Irving Brauer (chairman, principal of <a href="http://www.brauerassociates.co.uk/">Brauer Associates</a>); Phil Holden (managing director of<a href="http://www.pascalls.co.uk/"> Pascall+Watson</a>); <a href="http://www.lucybullivant.net/">Lucy Bullivant</a> (architectural curator, critic, author); Paolo Brescia (partner of <a href="http://www.obr.eu/">Open Building Research</a>), and Kasia Fiutowska (founding partner of <a href="http://www.sketch-design.net">Sketch Design</a>). The Leaf Design Awards contains the following 10 categories: Mixed-Use Building of the Year; Residential Building of the Year; Commercial Building of the Year; International Interior Design Award; Refurbishment of the Year Young Architect Award of the Year; Public Building of the Year; Best Sustainable Development; Best Future Building; International Building of the Year

For the first time this year, a Lifetime Achievement in the Architectural Award will be given. No names/firms were shortlisted in this category.

The International Building of the Year for 2012 will be selected from the finalists.

The shortlist for the Mixed-Use Building of the Year include: Steven Holl Architects, with Daeyang Gallery &amp; House, Seoul, South Korea; Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects, with Tidemill Academy &amp; Deptford Lounge, Deptford, UK

The shortlist for the Residential Building of the Year, Single Occupancy, include the following: Studiomk27, with Cobogo House Sao Paulo, Brazil; Sou Fujimoto Architects, with House like a single Tree, Tokyo, Japan; Architectureburo Govaert &amp; Vanhoutte, with House Roces, Bruges, Belgium; Sanjay Puri Architects, with Courtyard House, Rajasthan, India; Peter Rose &amp; Partners, with East House, Chilmark, Massachusetts, US

The shortlist for the Residential Building of the Year, Multiple Occupancy include the following: Studio Daniel Libeskind, DCA Architects PTE Ltd, with Reflections at Keppel Bay, Singapore; Rafiq Azam, with SA Residence, Dhaka, Bangladesh; Gonzalo Mardones Architecture Studio, with Ignacia Apartments, Santiago, Chile; Tabanlioglu Architects Melkan Gursel &amp; Murat Tabanioglu, with Loft Gardens, Levent, Istanbul

The shortlist for Commercial Building of the Year include: Vittorio Grassi Architetto &amp; Partners, with Koa Zambon Company Restaurant, Bresso, Italy; Mossessian &amp; Partners, with 5 Merchant Square, London, UK; David Chipperfield Architects, with Peek &amp; Cloppenburg Flagship Store Vienna, Austria; WOW Architects, with Vivanta Hotel, Bangalore, India; Tabanlioglu Architects Melkan Gursel &amp; Murat Tabanioglu, with Asmacati Shopping &amp;meeting point, Balcova, Turkey; Peter Rose &amp; Partners, with Housing Tower at Kripalu Center for Yoga &amp; Health, Stockbridge, US
