Last Friday, the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board made the recommendation to kill 45,000 wild horses currently captive in government holding facilities throughout the US. The vote has come under great scrutiny by organizations who argue for using birth control to minimize population growth, instead.
Over the last 20 years, the BLM has been rounding up and removing wild horses from their natural habitat in the interest of allowing privately owned cattle to graze on the land. What they have experienced since then is the unsustainable financial burden of keeping the horses alive in their facilities – $49 million in 2015, alone – and the task of coming up with an alternative solution.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released a statement condemning the vote, expressing, “The decision of the BLM advisory board to recommend the destruction of the 45,000 wild horses currently in holding facilities is a complete abdication of responsibility for their care. The agency would not be in this situation but for their long-term mis-management. Alternatives to this proposal have been ignored for over 20 years.”

In June, a meeting for the House Subcommittee on Federal Lands heard from California Congressman Tom McClintock (R), who argued that wild horses are overpopulated. Ginger Kathrens, director of The Cloud Foundation, explained, “Current management practices of round-up, removal and warehousing … cause compensatory reproduction – an increase in populations as a result of decreased competition for forage.” In other words, there would not be a surge in wild horses if the BLM hadn’t removed most of them from their land, in the first place.
The HSUS is calling for alternative fertility control programs to slow down population growth. According to Ms. Kathrens, “Livestock outnumber horses and burros 47 to 1, and livestock are allocated 82 percent of the forage,” suggesting the real problem lies with the decision to use the land for raising cattle and calling into question the need for continuing the practice.

Regarding the comment of p ash - wild horses may endanger the Mojave-goat, but mostly because they have been driven from more suitable pastures by CATTLE. Just the same way as huge numbers of livestock, grazing on public land, are driving away and replacing OTHER species depending on the same kind of forage. It all boils down to cattle and sheep, in private property, fattened on public land "pastures" (regardless of the suitability of the pastures in question or the damages done to certain regions) for private profits, and to livestock ranchers wanting to get rid of all "grazing competition" for their holy cash-cows. And if you think this "American free range beef" seriously is feedig the USA, better take a closer look at the amount of cattle raised in factory farming and at the official import-EXPORT-statistics of the industry...
I think they should be released on the land where a certain pipeline is being built. If anyone is up to it, I've got some free time.

This action is so wrong. This is so tragically wrong. So wrong minded. The American Wild Horse is the very symbol of the American Spirit... of FREEDOM. These beautiful animals are. indeed, a great part of our American heritage... our American psyche. And, MUST BE PROTECTED. Please support and/or donate to the: AWHPC, American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign -- they are loosely a coalition of about 60 or more (American) horse advocate's, public interest and conservationist organizations dedicated to preserving American wild horses [and burros in viable free - roaming herds for generations to come] as part of our national heritage. (For example, certainly, there must be some kind of Land Trust/Trust arrangement that could be had and set-up to protect and sustain these beautiful animals -- our beautiful American heritage. For ourselves -- our children... and our children's children. Thank you.)
LET OBAMA, SECTY JEWELL & BLM DIRECTOR HEAR FROM YOU DIRECTLY!! SHARE. SHARE. The ongoing murder of our wild horses has GOT to stop! The BLM is supposed to MANAGE THE PUBLIC LAND AND PUBLIC RESOURCES THEREON FOR THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE BENEFICIARIES - THAT'S US-THE PUBLIC! Not a few ranchers. Not an oil company. Not a water company. Not a coal company. THE CITIZENS AND TAXPAYERS OF THE UNITED STATES WHO PAY YOUR SALARIES. I'm sick to death of our government destroying OUR RESOURCES for the benefit of a few welfare ranchers who pay almost NOTHING for grazing their herds on public lands. Take about hard-core "welfare cases." We need to let Secty Jewell, Dept of the Interior, THAT WE WON'T STAND FOR THIS CRAP ANY MORE! The hell with those ranchers. They're the reason our wolves are once again being aggressively hunted-WHILE FACTS SHOW THAT VERY FEW OF THEIR HERD ANIMALS ARE EVER THE VICTIMS OF WOLVES! This whole-sale exploitation of our public lands is a disgrace. While this administration continues to give away our resources for virtually nothing, you cut the budgets of the National Parks, thereby limiting access by US citizens. THAT IS INSANE. Corporate welfare at our expense has got to stop!! They don't pay taxes to support the government and infrastructure of our country while bleeding it dry of resources and disastrously polluting our environment. How about STANDING FOR THE PEOPLE AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE YOUR TENURE IS OVER?
MORE CONTACTS / BLM ADVISORY BOARD & IS REPRESENTATIVES U.S. ON FEDERAL LANDS SUBCOMMITTEE / PETITION LINK "Current management practices of round-up, removal and warehousing … cause compensatory reproduction – an increase in populations as a result of decreased competition for forage,” Kathrens said. Kathrens says there are humane population control alternatives to castration, , long-term confinement and slaughter, such as shooting birth control darts at the animals in their natural habitat. Of course, she would prefer the animals be left alone and not have to compete with ever-growing populations of cattle, which are often artificially inseminated to feed ever-growing populations of humans. And? Let them euthanize the horses. So long as they are doing it humanely and using the product (yes, we are able to eat horse meat and people will gladly do it) then what is the issue? The government is trying to feed YOU and you're complaining about that? The horses aren't doing anything useful and we have plenty of horses already in this world, wouldn't hurt to get rid of a few. We're so worried about making ourselves feel better anymore that we aren't acknowledging things that need to be done.
Well, you government infidels, I've got news for ya'... Not while I'm still here on this Earth and not after I'm dead either, 'cause when I become a spirit, I shall haunt you to the ends of the Earth!! Ruthless redneck livestock ranchers are the invasive species...
The horses selected to be euthanized are already in holding pens, and deemed un-adoptable as they have been passed over through 3 adoption events. These horses need an intervention immediately, somewhere to get away from BLM. I wrote letters and made phone calls and everyone MUST CALL in person and let these people know that we we will not allow this to happen without a fight.
Beautiful animal like wild horses are irreplaceable. The natural beauty horses in the wild is sooooo breath taking. PLEASE SAVE THE WILD HORSES.
This is sick, beyond sick. And you people let this happen so you can eat meat, get cancer, and make a profit.
While I thing the government is doing its sally poor job I was wondering how many cows are slaughtered for human consumption and dog food. Horses can be eaten and used for making pet food. so why horses more to be "protected" then the cattle slaughtered to make McDonalds hamburgers. I like horses as much as the next person but cows seem as important as these horses. Killing any animal is not pleasant work but it is part of our everyday activities as a meat consuming society.
Aren't they an invasive species introduced by Spanish invaders and explorers?
Honestly, let it happen. The locals that know the situation actually know better. They're destroying the fauna by not grazing it like the local Mojave goat--the niche species they've come close to eradicating because they eat all their food. We're the ones who introduced the destroyers of the Mojave goat. It's our fault as a species. Killing them would be far more merciful to the desert's ecology than killing off a native species. Yes, I was born and raised in the Mojave. Yes, I've known this since I was about 9 or 10 because I was taught it. I still live in the desert.
Katie, after reading the hearing memo, we should also put pressure on the Humane Society, and put them partly at fault. They and the BLM were put in charge of developing a proper fertility control method since they started the program in 2004. They haven't been able to develop an effective fertility control vaccine for over 12 years.
