Timber-clad folk museum rises like a jagged-edged crown in Norway

Norwegian design studio <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/reiulf-ramstad-arkitekter-as" target="_blank">Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter</a> (RRA) just completed work on the new extension for the <a href="http://www.romsdalsmuseet.no" target="_blank">Romsdal Folk Museum</a>, one of the largest and most comprehensive folk museums in Norway. Completed in RRA’s signature style, the museum is clad in locally sourced timber and is topped by jagged roofline evocative of a giant crystal. The landmark building will serve as both an architectural gem and as a new home for the artifacts of the region’s cultural identity.

The new complex was built from locally produced timber and concrete and is designed to complement the surrounding landscape.

RRA’s new complex will house permanent exhibitions that had previously only been available as seasonal exhibits due to space constraints.

The jagged roofline mimics the shape of Molde’s mountain range.

Vertically oriented rectangular windows punctuate the facade.

In addition to exhibits on local art, international architecture, and historical records, the crystal-like building will also include a cafe and museum shop.
