The streets of South African cities are filled with singing and dancing people today, as the nation celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday. Dutch design firm WHIM Architecture decided to celebrate the anti-apartheid hero’s birthday by designing a monumental structure shaped like Mandela’s face for the side of a mountain overlooking Cape Town. “A monument will teach next generations about the man who gave his life for justice and show his heritage,” explains WHIM. The massive features a vegetated facade, and it will be powered by solar panels, according to the architects’ description.
