Urban design can improve the way we live, but can a well-designed neighborhood actually create an instant vibrant community with jobs, education and affordable homes? WXY Architecture + urban design is out to show that it is not only possible, but the way of the future. The Peninsula is a 5-acre project in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx that will feature everything you need for green, healthy living in the city, including retail, industrial and community spaces along with affordable housing and recreational areas.
The Peninsula in Hunts Point intends to create a community campus for both living and working, and is designed “as a hub that ties together a mix of activities– commercial, manufacturing and residential — around a central plaza, fostering interaction between residents, visitors, and the Hunts Point community,” according to Claire Weisz, principle at WXY Architecture + urban design. The project will host 740 units of 100% affordable housing, 52,000 square feet of recreational space, 49,000 square feet of light industrial space, a community facility space and 21,000 square feet of commercial/retail space.
Tenants wil include the Hunts Point Brewing Company, Il Forno Bakery and Lightbox NY film studio. There will also be a supermarket, school, community health center and job training facilities to create a live-work, mixed-use space that creates a vibrant community.
WXY Architects, along with Body Lawson Associates is developing the project for the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. The development will be built on the former site of the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center and the first phase should be completed in 2021, with the entire project complete by 2024.
“We are proud to be transforming this notorious site into a thriving mixed-use campus and true community asset,” says NYCEDC President Maria Torres-Springer. “With over 700 affordable apartments, space for community organizations and light manufacturing space, The Peninsula will create homes and job opportunities that benefit the people of the South Bronx.”
