Modern Green-Roofed Homes Blend Into Poland’s Countryside

The developers wanted to minimize the project’s visual impact upon its surroundings while taking advantage of the site’s southern solar access and views of the forest. As a result, the narrow lot was designed with the three houses in a row that are partially built into the ground and partially raised up. Sloping green roofs angle towards the road, helping to reduce the project’s visual impact, while the back houses see only a green roof and forest instead of a house.
The green roofs provide insulation for the homes, protection from the elements and assist in stormwater infiltration. The homes are oriented to take advantage of passive solar heating and natural daylight . Part of each home is located under the ground level, which provides additional insulation and protection from the elements.
Design for the project began in 2007 and it was recently completed in 2010. The project also won the Grand Prix for “2010 Architecture of the Year in Silesia region”.
