Modern Green-Roofed Homes Blend Into Poland’s Countryside

A new project in Rybnik, Poland by <a href="http://www.jna.com.pl/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=82" target="_blank">Jojko+Nawrocki Architekci</a> explores ways that we can minimize the visual impact of architecture upon the landscape. The <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2010/11/08/historic-uk-hostel-turned-into-super-green-residential-housing/" target="_blank">eco housing project</a> was designed to make the most of solar orientation while keeping a low profile and providing beautiful views of the nearby forest. The resulting project consists of a series of three partially underground homes that feature <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/2010/03/03/stunning-green-roofed-apartment-building-rises-in-amsterdam/" target="_blank">sloping green roofs</a>.

This housing project was designed to respond the question: "what the contemporary house means nowadays?"

The project was designed for efficient sun orientation, while providing access to the road and views of the forest.

The narrow lot was designed with three houses in a row that are <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2010/10/08/subhus-amazing-norwegian-hotel-built-into-the-ground/" target="_blank">partially built into the ground</a> and partially raised up.

From the road, drivers and nearby neighbors see only sloping green roofs rather than multi-story homes.

Each home is clad in different materials. This one features narrow strips of wood partially offset from the home that serve as a rain screen.

Large windows and overhanging decks allow daylight to reach into the homes.

Homes have beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and nearby forest.

This home is clad in gray brick and features a sunny and warm courtyard for the home's pool.

While the homes are positioned close together, the smart design ensures that each retains a sense of privacy.

Large south-facing windows provide expansive views while allowing ample light to reach inside.

The sloping green roof blends into the ground level and offers extra insulation and protection from the elements.

The project began back in 2007 and it was realized and completed in 2010.

The project also won the 2010 Grand Prix for "Architecture of the Year in Silesia region".
