Landes Maritime Pine is the main material that was used for the construction of the Sumbiosi prefab by Team ABC . Not only is it readily available, but it also has excellent thermal qualities that help to improve the home’s overall energy efficiency. A south-facing dwelling with enclosures on the east and western edges of the home, it receives an enormous amount of passive solar heating and natural daylight.
The cladding and interior materials help to trap that warmth so that it lasts throughout the night and small openings release any excess. Adding to its low environmental impact are a self-irrigating green roof and a natural wastewater treatment system, both of which help to conserve precious water resources. The interior V-shape promotes natural ventilation in addition to spacious living – despite the relatively small size. Stay tuned for more about this team and others as our SDE 2012 coverage continues.
