The uber-industrial China exported over 3.2 million shipping containers [9] last year alone, far too many to repurpose or recycle them all. The ambitious hotel, in a rural region outside of the city of Changzhi, transforms storage containers like these, into a luxury getaway.
The boutique hotel offers cozy rooms in fifty or one hundred square feet, with eight and a half foot ceilings. The rooms may be small [10], but comfort is not spared. Each is furnished with high quality sofas, fixtures and bedding, including traditional lanterns and furniture. Guests can also hang out in the shipping container [11] lobby and restaurant, or watch a tea ceremony or music performance in the courtyards.
The pop-up hotel took just three months to design and install, exercising the alternative uses that facilities like these could have in disaster situations. The container hotels [12] could also be designed in one city, and easily transported to another, making pop-up hotels possible anywhere.
The Xiang Xiang Pray House will open in August of 2012.
