We love architecture and we adore dogs—and this amazing collaboration by some exceptional architects combines the two. Architecture For Dogs, by MUJI’s director Kenya Hara, is an "extremely sincere collection" of ideas and downloadable plans for dog-owners to build structures for their best furry friends. Shigeru Ban, Atelier Bow-Wow, MVRDV, Toyo Ito, Konstantin Grcic and Hara Design Institute are just some of the designers and architects who contributed to this inventive—and slightly bizarre—series.
Japanese architect Shigeru Ban designed a flexible dog space by using his trademark recycled cardboard tubes (attached with two wires) that can be turned from a bed, to a swing, to a maze, and even a chair or table for the human friends.
Torafu Architects designed a hammock for a Jack Russell Terrier using an old piece of clothing from the pup’s human friend, as this breed is set to be the happiest when it’s close to its two-legged companion. Sou Fujimoto created a smaller version of his House NA in Tokyo for a Boston terrier, which consists of a scaffolding-like structure that has no walls, plenty of fresh air and light and it even doubles as a storage unit.
Dutch studio MVRDV came out with a playful doghouse for a Beagle that started with an archetypical shape and end up as both, a hideaway and interactive toy. Toyo Ito’ s Mobile Home for Shiba was conceived as a “doghouse for walks” allowing people to get out with their best friend whether it is raining, too hot or even if the dog is too old to walk. Konstantin Grcic ’s Paramount was designed so Toy Poodles can look themselves in the mirror, as they are said to be notoriously finicky about their looks and are one of the few breeds to recognize themselves in a mirror.
