Affordable Sugar Hill Housing Complex Aims to Be a Model of Urban Renewal in Harlem

Adjaye Associates ‘ 13-story Sugar Hill housing complex is currently under construction in Harlem and, when complete, will bring 124 affordable housing units, a children’s museum, and an early education center to the neighborhood. Powered by funds from city, state and federal organizations, as well as from private investments, the building is hoped to invigorate the local community and act as a green model of urban renewal.
The Sugar Hill housing complex is another example of David Adjaye’s focus on social responsibility-driven architecture. Adjaye continues to promote socially and culturally important issues through his designs such as the African-American Smithsonian Museum and the Stephen Lawrence Centre , and the Sugar Hill housing complex is no different. In addition to the residences, the new Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling will act to boost creativity and community for the area by telling the neighborhood’s history, which is full of stories from the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s.
Though it’s uncertain whether or not the building will push for any green certifications, it will certainly revitalize an under-utilized urban site and help bring positive change to the community.
