Striking Woodlands Residence Receives Dappled Light Through California Tree Tops

Field Architecture's renovated Woodlands Residence does an amazing job of capturing dappled light that pierces through a canopy of trees, ensuring that it requires zero artificial illumination throughout the day. Built on the side of a very steep slope populated with Oak and Redwood trees, the home has been renovated with modern "bookend" additions on either side that retain the character of the mid-century California structure.
No stranger to Inhabitat, the designers of South Africa’s precious Ubuntu Center have taken a very gentle but also contemporary approach to this home renovation by gutting the claustrophobic interior and opening it up to the surrounding forest. To further emphasize the centrality of nature, Field Architecture built a gorgeous glass staircase that creates a transparent connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces .
The four staggered sections are each clad in natural materials that require very little maintenance, while the interior floors are all made up of bamboo – arguably one of the most sensible building materials on earth. Also, and this is a first for us, the interior countertops are all made from recycled glass . According to the architects, “The resulting space is flexible and continuous, and extends the play space into the canopy of the trees.”
