Volkswagen’s Think Blue Beetle is Made From 2,805 Pieces of Recycled Trash!

This luminous Volkswagen Beetle ^[6] is a life-size work of art crafted by sculptor Haribaabu Naatesan ^[7] from over 2,805 pieces of scrap ^[8]. The detailed replica of the classic car ^[9] is made from 800 spark plugs, 200 bottle caps, 60 mother boards ^[10], and an incredible array of other commonly discarded items - including audio cassettes, typewriters, pens, and barbeque sticks.

Haribaabu Naatesan ^[7] created the Beetle art piece as part of Volkswagen’s Think Blue Campaign ^[11]. The extensive assortment of trash was collected during Think Blue Clean Up drives undertaken by the German auto-engineering firm at various locations. The trash was then meticulously sorted and assembled by Natesaan and his team over the course of 16 days, as shown in this nifty time-lapse video ^[12].

The Mumbai-based artist works entirely in the medium of scrap ^[13], creating large-scale intricate sculptures ^[14] with an intent to bring life to otherwise lifeless discarded objects.

The Think Blue Beetle is presently installed at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival ^[15] in Mumbai, where it will be on display until February 12.
