3013 Installation Made From Recycled Wood Cascades Down a London Building

Coiling down four storeys in a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/designers-display-7-innovative-everyday-uses-for-biophotovoltaic-panels-powered-by-algae/" target="_blank">London</a> courtyard, the dramatic 3013 Installation is made entirely of recycled wood. Designed and fabricated by students at the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/farmacy-provides-plants-and-herbs-to-heal-london/" target="_blank">Architectural Association</a> School, the airy sculptures are made from recycled exhibition panels. The students designed the giant installation as part of the school’s summer program.

Led by artist Lawrence Lek, designer Onur Ozkaya and architect Jesse Randzio, the students conceived of the design, and constructed the oversized leaf-like pieces themselves, which hang from their fourth floor <a href="http://inhabitat.com/stunning-saw-toothed-roof-floods-swiss-vocational-school-with-light/" target="_blank">roof</a>.

The three <a href="http://inhabitat.com/27-sol-lewitt-sculptures-enliven-new-yorks-city-hall-park/" target="_blank">twisting sculptures</a> contort their way down the Architectural Associations building in Bedford Square.

The project is based on the future design of London, which is surrounded by green countryside. With a restriction lifted on building <a href="http://inhabitat.com/solar-oled-tiles-transform-skscrapers-into-zero-energy-displays/" target="_blank">skyscrapers</a>, the project focuses on London’s inevitable growth- that will lead inward, and skyward.

The project also hypothesizes that new structures will build off of old, using each other for structural support. The students notion of the future also heavily relies upon recycling materials, so the structures were built from leftover plywood cuts from <a href="http://inhabitat.com/artist-swoon-builds-a-musical-house-for-new-orleans-out-of-salvaged-materials/" target="_blank">salvaged</a> exhibition panels.

The <a href="http://inhabitat.com/ethan-hayes-chutes-quirky-wooden-shacks-are-a-delightful-hodgepodge-of-found-materials/" target="_blank">installation</a> cascades down the four floors, as if a leave fluttering in the wind left a wooden trail. In relation with the AA’s existing building, the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/lavas-disaster-relief-prefab-pod-is-both-funky-and-functional/" target="_blank">plywood</a> strips create new surfaces below. Temporary shelters and roofs are created that could guard from rain or snow. On the floor of the courtyard, the spiraling structure provides a gathering point, a semi-private area in a public place for sitting, eating lunch, or reading a book.

The Architectural Associations 3013 Installation addresses how the London of the future may be occupied, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/art-collectors-flat-renovated-with-reclaimed-wood-from-the-rotterdam-rijksmuseum/" target="_blank">unifying historical and new structures</a> to create new spaces for visitors to interact with.
