Gallery: Alta Devices Unveils the World’s Lightest, Most Efficient Sola...

Alta Devices are known for their innovative solar power solutions – and they’ve broken new ground once again with their new line of photovoltaics, which are touted as the lightest and most efficient charging mats on the market. Developed for military use, the mats are slightly larger than a piece of paper and weigh in at only 4-ounces – so they can provide plenty of energy for a soldier in the field without the bulk of older technology.

Soldiers in the field sometimes need to carry packs that weight 100-pounds – one-third of which is taken up by batteries. Alta Device’s new mat can reduce that weight by up to 25 pounds without reducing power capacity, which makes a huge difference to individuals lugging around that weight in the field.

The pack itself can be folded in half when not in use and it comes in a 4 ounce size and a larger 10 ounce size that can generate up to 120 watt-hours a day. The technology can also be used to extend flight times on unmanned drones, and in the future it could be used in solar vehicles and consumer electronics to reduce power consumption.
