Gallery: A Second BP Oil Rig in the Gulf is an Unsafe “Ticking Time Bom...

It seems BP hasn’t learned its lesson just yet, though we for sure have learned ours — stop drilling! President Obama just removed the temporary moratorium on new offshore drilling saying that they figured out what went wrong with the Deepwater Horizon and we’re not at risk of another catastrophe. Well, some whistle blowers in the Gulf of Mexico that work in the oil industry would like to tell you otherwise. It’s been discovered that yet another BP oil rig is breaking a whole host of safety regulations meant to keep disasters from happening and because about 7,000 documents noting the safety of the operation seem to be missing, nobody’s sure exactly how many of the laws are being broken.

The platform in question is dubbed the Atlantis and its daily oil production is at 200,000 barrels — more than three times the amount that spilled into the gulf from the Deepwater Horizon each day. It is located about 124 miles off the coast of Louisiana and a contractor named Kenneth Abbott, who was working on Atlantis until just last year, told federal regulators about the missing safety documents, that many of its safety systems are out of date and that a host of the platform’s design schemes were never correctly approved.

Abbott tipped off the government about this “ticking time bomb” well before the Deepwater Horizon disaster and since then many government officials and environmental agencies have been questioning its safety. A group of concerned consumers sued the federal government to stop production on the platform back in May until the proper safety documents could be produced and a group of congress people urged the Department of the Interior to close the platform as well. It seems like a lot of people want this well shuttered but as far as we can tell it’s still pumping out crude. We’re wondering how many other “ticking time bombs” are in our coastal waters and just how many disasters we have to go through until we solve this problem.
