Abu Dhabi Announces Green Hotel For Wildlife Resort
The United Arab Emirates are famed for luxurious hotels such as the Burj Al Arab and the Emirates Palace, however the emirate of Abu Dhabi has announced plans to construct a ‘green hotel’ for the new Al Ain Wildlife and Park Resort. The hotel will be Abu Dhabi’s first hotel to be built to a new set of Green Hotel Building Guidelines, which were created to minimize the carbon footprint of major construction projects while regulating energy usage and encouraging on-site water capture, alternate sewage treatment, and water reuse.
Assessed on the mandatory Estidama Pearl Rating System, the Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort Hotel will be a “multi-faceted development designed around wildlife to create an outstanding sustainable leisure and learning destination for people who want to be in touch with nature.” Speaking at the inaugural World Green Tourism Abu Dhabi exhibition and conference, Shaikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of ADTA said, “We want this hotel to be a showcase for sustainable hospitality. This is where guests will stay in total harmony with nature and wildlife.”
The resort is expected to achieve 4 pearls in Estidama’s Pearl Rating System, which is similar to the LEED system established by the USGBC. Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Director General of AWPR termed the announcement as “an important step in development of a truly sustainable leisure and learning destination.”
The resort is still in the planning stages, but the hotel is expected to be over 50,000 square metres in size when finished, with over 200 rooms, state-of-the-art business facilities, and a ballroom with capacity for 1,500 people. Leisure facilities will include a Kids’ Club, swimming pools, and top-class dining venues such as a restaurant on the roof top that will provide sweeping views of the wildlife in the safari park as well as an upper-level Pool Dining restaurant overlooking the entire pool complex.
In line with being the emirate’s first ”green hotel’, the Al Ain Wildlife and Park Resort Hotel is expected to be constructed using renewable, reused, or recycled materials. It is also expected to implement programs designed to save water and energy, and it will reduce solid waste. The Al Ain Resort Hotel aims to reduce the environmental impact of buildings and other supporting systems, without sacrificing comfort and health or aesthetic.
