The Dutch have a history of being obsessed with flowers, and Netherlands-based artist Anne ten Donkelaar is no exception. Her "Flower Constructions" are beautiful, ornate collages reminiscent of botanical illustrations and natural history specimens. Each work is composed of magazine cut-outs, dried plants, photos, and illustrations. Mixing size and scale, she creates fanciful, delicate, and visually captivating worlds.

Donkelaar recalls being absorbed in the world of flowers from an early age, “I was fascinated by the many colors and forms they took” she recalls. With the use of printed images and dried blooms fastened with pins, she arranges her flowers so that they appear as if they are floating. Vibrant and complex, they are so elaborate that they draw the viewer in to wander within the frames like a scene from Alice in Wonderland.

Fans of Donkelaar’s work should also take a look at her “Broken Butterfly” series where she restores battered and partially disintegrated insects with pins, plants, and string.
