Artist EVOL’s Rural City Installation Tops Off a Scale Community with a Green “Roof”

Earlier this year artist <a href="http://www.evoltaste.com/">EVOL</a> was invited to create an installation for the<a href="http://msdockville.de/kunst"> MS Dockville Music Festival</a> in Hamburg, Germany. The event, which is expected to draw in thousands, is an end of summer soiree that celebrates art and music in the great outdoors. EVOL, who is <a href="http://inhabitat.com/artist-evol-transforms-lackluster-urban-spaces-into-miniature-architectural-sprawl/">best known</a> for creating landscape integrated installations, set out to create the same on the MS Dockville site. But when he was met with his canvas all he found was endless meadow, trees and blue sky - not what he was expecting as an artist working primarily within the urbanscape. So in the face of an uniform site, rather than adding and building up, EVOL decided to cut into the landscape and create a contrasting derelict fabric embedded in the earth.

EVOL along with a his friends and helpers worked for 8 days cutting away at the meadow where they then buttressed the walls with particle-board sheets -- and in true EVOL style -- cut and paste his signature photographic <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/archicture">architecture </a>prints to the surfaces. The rural city is of a lilliputian scale, but is navigable by the average man and woman on foot.

The installation speaks volumes about the destruction of nature in favor of the sometimes ugly and unmoving aesthetic that comes with urban development and sprawl.

In his rural city, the relief only comes above the ruins with the former meadow creating a green escape likened to<a href="http://inhabitat.com/world%E2%80%99s-highest-tennis-court-was-a-green-roof-atop-the-burj-al-arab-in-dubai/"> garden roofs</a>.

The "streets" remain unpaved.

The grid planning reflects the stark and monotonous aesthetic of the architecture itself.

Once the festival is over the project can be easily infilled with dirt and heal naturally.
