No longer a background flower, designer Asif Khan has taken the subdued aesthetic of Gypsophila (better known as Baby’s Breath) and let it bloom into something splendid to sit on. Kahn began working with the flora when he was challenged by the Design Museum in London to create something special with London’s local plant life as a base material. What resulted was “Harvest,” a breathtaking series of furniture in which the sturdy is fused with the delicate, and the bland becomes something spectacular.

To create these billowing bursts, Khan took advantage of the Gypsophila’s natural ability to interlock. Once the appropriate amount of the plant had bloomed, it was harvested, woven and then placed into molds to be freeze-dried over the course of several weeks. After hardening, each piece received a coating of linseed oil resin to lock its shape in place.

Harvest is an interesting concept that not only brings light upon the use of unconventional, under-appreciated materials, but reinforces a connection between the interior and natural exterior world - a place we often forget to consider in our busy urban lives.
