Gallery: Award-Winning Sink Made from ...

  • Most recycled rubber is trod underfoot — it’s used for flooring, as a playground or athletic field mulch, and some companies use recycled rubber in the soles of their shoes. But this elegant RUBBiSH sink uses a flexible sheet of recycled rubber to form a lightweight, waterproof surface for a shallow sink.

The sink is created by supporting the edges of the sheet, clamping the middle with the drain basket, and letting the natural topology of the rubber sheet define the slope of the bowl. Less than one pound of recycled rubber is needed for this sink. The RUBBiSH sink was designed by Minarc studio and was an award winner in this year’s Architect magazine R + D awards.

Although the material is a natural for sinks, I think there are many other uses that a lighweight sheet of rubber could be used for. The durability of rubber might also be questioned, when compared to traditional sink materilas such as ceramic, stone, glass, and metal. But, on the other hand, the lightweight material could allow a lighter sink base and support to be used.
